Brief encounters on the West Highland Line

28 Feb, 2019

In 2018, the West Highland Community Rail Partnership staged a series of highly successful performances of a specially commissioned play, ‘Brief Encounters on the West Highland Line.’

Inspired by the classic David Lean film, the play was specifically written for performance in station tearooms and lineside venues. All performances sold out within a week, garnered rave review from the national press and left audiences wanting more. The events won the bronze Best Community Engagement Event award at the 2018 Community Rail Awards.

The heart-warming comedic play highlights themes of rural setting, seasonal employment and fleeting relationships, and is ideal for staging at rail-side venues in combination with a meal, thus boosting local trade. Although the play was originally written for the West Highland Line, it can be tailored to any specific location.

Performed by The Iron Road Collective, the company is now seeking to expand their captivating brand of railway related performance across the rural railway network. If your CRP would like to stage your own play, please get in touch with the partnership by email ( or write to them at WHCRP, PO Box 7061, PH33 9AS, Fort William.

£900 per performance – discounts available for longer runs. Special rates or CRPs and station friends associations.
