Iconic poet featured at Glossop’s Poetry Platform

The Friends of Glossop Station are delighted to announce a new display for their Poetry Platform at the Derbyshire station, with the inclusion of a piece from one the UK’s most iconic contemporary poets.

The poems, chosen by volunteers Penny Greenwood and Paul Marsh, are in celebration of The Year of the English Coast and to acknowledge the opening in 2021 of England’s Coastal Path. Paul has also designed the display. Poems featured include weĺl known favourites Smooth between Sea and Land by AE Houseman, Sea Fever by John Masefield and Dover Beach by Matthew Arnold.

Of particular interest is a new poem – Nation’s Ode to the Coast- by contemporary poet John Cooper-Clarke commissioned by the National Trust to mark the special bond felt by most people towards the sea and its coastline. The Trust has kindly given the station friends special permission for this poem to appear in the display.

With restrictions easing, the friends group are hoping the new display will spur people on to revisit their favourite coastlines again – hopefully by train!
