On Saturday 5th December Friends of Glossop Station FoGS held their annual Christmas Gala at Glossop Station on a very blustery day indeed!
Father Christmas arrived promptly by train from the North Pole. (via Manchester Piccadilly? Ed) He was greeted warmly by over 100 children and their families. Moving then to the station’s waiting room Father Christmas gave each child a free gift from supplies kindly provided by Northern Rail and supplemented with satsumas and sweets from FoGS!
Although the queue to see Santa was a lengthy one the crowd was in good humour as they enjoyed festive music provided by the folk group Spindrift. Children also had the opportunity to create their own tree decorations and the tree quickly filled with an array of these. Also on display was a seasonal interactive model railway provided by the stalwarts of Glossop Model Railway Club.
FoGS’ Northern Rail guest this year was Natalie Loughborough, Customer Service Director, who switched the lights on a Christmas tree kindly donated by a local Garden Centre.
In a speech of welcome Neil Williams of FOGS thanked Natalie and Glossop Line Manager Theo McLauchlan for the significant support that Northern had so readily given over their years of the franchise to a multiplicity of projects and community events at Glossop Station.
Amidst the crowd Neil was touched to see the return of one disabled guest and his parents who, every year, make the journey to Glossop from Chorlton by bus and train as they view it as a start to their Christmas.
FoGS wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.
