Settle Carlisle CRP has been busy on a number of projects over the last few months, to make improvements for rail users on the popular line.
Dent approach road refurbishment project.
This involved improvements to the heavily potholed and unsealed surface of the main approach to the station which has been in poor condition for many years. The approach road has been re-surfaced with fully lining and marking out of car parking spaces, provision of a bus stop point, turn round facilities and dedicated pedestrian walking route. The improvements benefit rail users arriving by car, bus, cycle and foot – especially in poor weather. There are also access benefits to local houses and the holiday lettings at the station buildings.
The project was initiated through the S&C Station Improvements Group (SIG) led by Settle Carlisle CRP (the DevCo, or Settle-Carlisle Railway Development Company) and involved input and funding from Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line (FoSCL), Northern and Network Rail.
Kirkby Stephen Station
The pedestrian access to this platform at Kirkby Stephen station has been significantly enhanced from a rough unsurfaced track to a sealed surface path with handrails and a new entrance gate at road level. This project has resulted from the actions of the Settle Carlisle CRP led Station Improvements Group (Northern, Network Rail, DevCo and FoSCL) working with local passenger representatives, the then local MP, the National Parks, and the local authority. Northern funded the path improvements. At the same time the local authority improved the roadside layby adjacent to the path entrance – enhancing the whole project. This project has significantly improved the access to this platform for all users- especially those who found the footbridge steps to the south bound station access difficult. This is a really good example of all interested rail and non-rail organisations coming together for the benefit of rail users and the CRP in action.
Settle Station entrance glazing screen
The Settle Carlisle CRP, FoSCL, Northern and Network Rail have worked together to fund the refurbishment of the historic glazed entrance screen from the platform into the ticket office area at Settle station.
The CRP provided funding for refurbishment of the glazing bars and FoSCL worked with the approved contractors and their own local team to deliver this work which preserves and enhances the historic character of this key station on the line. Network Rail also supported the project by undertaking required structural repairs. Without this collaborative approach the improvements would not have happened.
