New planters filled with edible plants and herbs for the community to use are to be installed at Felixstowe Station.
The project is a collaboration between Edible Felixstowe – who are installing several planters around the town – the East Suffolk Lines Community Rail Partnership (CRP), and Greater Anglia.
Wooden planters will be filled with a variety of herbs and installed on the platforms at the station.
Once the herb gardens have become established, people will be able to help themselves to fresh herbs or enjoy their scent as they wait for trains.
Thalia Woodgate, East Suffolk Lines CRP officer, said: “We are delighted that the railway station has been included in this initiative to provide free food to local people. We hope the planters will attract and support bees and other wildlife and also brighten up the platforms for passengers, who are welcome to grab a handful of fresh herbs as they pass through.”
Kate White, co-director of Edible Felixstowe, said: “Edible Felixstowe is excited to partner with the Community Rail Partnership and Greater Anglia, recognising the significant role Felixstowe Station plays in our community. Our aim is to connect with even more local residents and visitors, highlighting the importance of supporting local food sources that are both accessible and sustainable. In addition, we are excited to introduce edible plants and pollinator-friendly flowers to benefit local wildlife.”
Alan Neville, Greater Anglia’s customer and community engagement manager, said: “The planters will be a wonderful addition to the station, making them more attractive and providing a boost for wildlife too. We are very grateful to everyone involved in helping to make Felixstowe Station more sustainable and welcoming.”
Edible Felixstowe would like to hear from local people about the types of herbs and plants they would like to see in the planters. Get in touch via their social media channels or www.ediblefelixstowe.org.
