Revamped community garden opens at Broxbourne Station

A new public garden has opened at Broxbourne Station thanks to the work of volunteers and local organisations.

As part of a bridge repair project carried out at the station in 2021, Broxbourne lost its original garden.

Now, thanks to the New River Line Community Rail Partnership (CRP) and station adopter volunteer, Keith Reast – who enlisted the help of Broxbourne Primary School, bridge contractor Murphys and Broxbourne Borough Council – a new garden area has opened following a two-year project.

Schoolchildren helped with the design of the garden, which features vibrant planting, bug hotels and an informative history board created with the help of Lowewood Museum.

Landscaping materials, work and plants were donated by Murphy’s for the garden, which also includes recycled railway sleepers.

The garden was officially opened on 16 July with guests including schoolchildren and representatives from Greater Anglia, Murphy’s, Network Rail and the New River Line CRP.

Katie Goldthorpe, officer for the New River Line CRP, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the results of this two-year project to recreate a station garden at Broxbourne.

“This has truly been a community project, and I would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work, time, support and funding which has been given to reinstate the garden, which we hope people will come and enjoy.”

Alan Neville, Greater Anglia’s customer and community engagement manager, said: “The new garden looks wonderful and so welcoming for visitors. I would like to thank and congratulate everyone involved in this wonderful project.”
