On Track
What is ‘On Track’?
‘On Track for inclusive train travel: a model for engaging disabled people with rail workforce culture change’ is a two-year innovation project focused on making rail travel more accessible and inclusive for disabled people.
Grant-funded by the Motability Foundation, this multi-partnership project is being delivered by Community Rail Network, RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) and two community rail partnerships – Community Rail Lancashire and GO Community Rail Partnership (Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire).
Why it matters
Many disabled people still describe rail travel as stressful or unpredictable. At the same time, there is ongoing commitment across the rail sector to improve access and inclusion.
‘On Track’ builds on the Motability Foundation’s research to understand passenger experiences, celebrate existing good practice, and collaborate on areas where journeys can become even more consistent, safe, and inclusive — helping to ensure rail travel feels welcoming for everyone
How we’re working
We follow a simple, co-designed process throughout the project:
- Discover – we learn from the real experiences of disabled people, as well as rail staff and partners in training and workplace culture.
- Define – we work together to identify shared challenges and decide what most needs attention.
- Develop – we co-design ideas, tools and approaches that fit the realities of rail travel and service delivery.
- Deliver – we test and learn with train operating companies and disabled people, refining what works so it can be shared more widely.
Our vision
- Welcomed passengers who feel listened to, respected and able to travel more easily and consistently.
- Confident staff who feel equipped, supported and valued in the role they play.
- An inclusive culture embedded in everyday rail, not an add-on.
