Campaign for Better Transport seeking contributions around ‘Bus Stop Standard’

Campaign for Better Transport is currently working to develop a ‘Bus Stop Standard’ to serve as best practice guidance for local authorities, manufacturers and operators, and they’re keen to hear insights from across community rail.

Previous research from Campaign for Better Transport found that whilst 86% of people live within a ten-minute walk of their nearest bus stop, almost a quarter (23%) are put off using the bus because of poorly maintained bus shelters.

A new Bus Stop Standard aims to be universal and scalable, while remaining flexible for location and budget. The Standard will explore several key aspects of design, delivery and upkeep of bus stops, including suitable infrastructure, accessibility, auditing, printed and digital information, and lifecycle.

Campaign for Better Transport is currently seeking views, experiences and case studies from across community rail to feed into the development of the Bus Stop Standard.

This includes contributions around:

  • What would facilitate better bus stop design and delivery in your local area
  • What specific facilities and information is appropriate for different types of bus stops
  • What successes and/or challenges has your organisation experienced in establishing or improving rail-bus links / onward bus travel from stations
  • What other partnerships, technologies, data/metrics, monitoring mechanisms you have knowledge of that might prove beneficial

Michael Solomon Williams, head of external affairs at Campaign for Better Transport, said: “I travelled a thousand miles around England and Wales by bus, asking passengers for their Bus Stop Stories. Time and again, people said how important clear information, safe shelters and comfortable waiting areas are, but sadly these are missing in too many places making catching the bus unappealing, and more difficult than it should be.

“A National Bus Stop Standard which prioritises accessibility, safety, comfort and up-to-date information could change this and transform bus journeys for the millions of people use buses every day.”
