The next Community Rail Education Network session will be held on Wednesday 16 September, 10-11:30am.

Please note this session will slightly differ from regular sessions, as it will take more of a webinar format.

Rail safety will become mandatory on the PSHE National Curriculum for primary and secondary pupils in September. This is a great opportunity for those of us in community rail to support schools with the new objective, whilst linking up with some new key contacts for other types of engagement (e.g. rail confidence trips, recruiting new volunteers, producing artwork at stations).

Whilst some of our members are confident in visiting schools and presenting to young people, not everyone has experience in this area and so we’re putting on a special edition of the Education Network to equip all members from different organisations (e.g. CRPs, friends’ groups, community stations) to deliver rail safety education with confidence.

During the session we will:

  • Look at the updated curriculum
  • Discuss how to engage with local schools and discuss the logistics of working with children
  • Hear from members who delivered rail safety education on different levels: a station adopter, a CRP officer without an education specialism and a CRP officer with an education background
  • Look through some key resources that can be used during sessions
  • Give some top tips and quick wins
  • Plan an activity in smaller groups
  • Answer any of your questions

The Education Network is open to anyone with an interest in railway education.

If you would like to join future meetings of the Education Network, or if you have any education or youth engagement matters you would like to discuss, please contact Karen Bennett on karen@communityrail.org.uk.
