Community Rail Week 2026 launches in Oxford celebrating ‘Journeys for All’

Rail Delivery Group, Community Rail Network and Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire Community Rail Partnerships launch Community Rail Week in Oxford.

Oxford has welcomed organisations from across Britain’s rail industry for the national launch of Community Rail Week 2026, says Community Rail Network today (Monday).

The week-long campaign, running from 1–7 June and organised by Community Rail Network with sponsorship from Rail Delivery Group, celebrates the people and projects helping make rail travel more inclusive, accessible and connected to local communities.

This year’s theme, ‘Journeys for All’, highlights how community rail partnerships and station volunteers are helping break down barriers to travel, tackle isolation and create more welcoming railway spaces.

Oxford station was selected as the venue for the national launch in recognition of the work being delivered locally by Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire community rail partnerships (CRPs) and their partners to improve accessibility, encourage greener travel and strengthen community connections.

Guests visited a newly unveiled community mural created by artist Tom McLean alongside more than 50 young people. Inspired by themes of rail, connection and belonging, the artwork reflects the growing role stations play as welcoming community spaces at the heart of local life.

The event also showcased the CRP’s accessibility and inclusion work, including the step-free “Access and Leisure” route linking Oxford station with accessible canal-side leisure opportunities.

The visit concluded at Yellow Submarine café, a local social enterprise supporting people with additional needs through training, employment opportunities and community programmes delivered in partnership with the CRP.

Community Rail Network chief executive Jools Townsend said: “We were delighted to launch Community Rail Week in Oxford and celebrate the fantastic work taking place locally to improve accessibility, inclusion and community wellbeing.

“Community rail is about helping people feel more connected, whether that’s building confidence to travel, creating welcoming station spaces or bringing communities together through local partnerships and projects. This year’s ‘Journeys for All’ theme highlights the important role railways can play in ensuring nobody feels left behind.”

Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire Community Rail Partnership CIC executive director Hannah McDonnall, said: “We are incredibly proud to host the national launch of Community Rail Week here in Oxford. It provides a powerful opportunity to showcase how we work with partners and local communities to break down barriers to rail travel and create more inclusive, connected places. Community rail partnerships play a vital role in bringing the railway closer to the people it serves, using local insight and strong partnerships to ensure everyone can feel confident travelling and connected to their community.”

Rail Delivery Group director of industry operations Dan Mann, said: “Improving accessibility across the rail network is essential to making sure everyone can travel independently, confidently and safely. We are proud to support Community Rail Week and celebrate the inspiring work of community rail partnerships, station volunteers and local organisations who are helping to break down barriers and create journeys for all.

“As the railway continues to change, this year’s theme highlights the importance of building a more accessible, inclusive and sustainable railway that serves every community.”

GWR senior community impact manager Emma Morris said: “Community Rail Week is a fantastic opportunity to recognise and celebrate the incredible work of Community Rail Partnerships, station adopters and volunteers right across the Great Western network. Their passion and dedication help our stations and the communities they serve to truly thrive, creating welcoming spaces and strengthening local connections.

“Their efforts play a vital role in showcasing the rich variety of destinations we serve, inspiring people to get out and explore everything the Great Western network has to offer. We’re grateful for their ongoing support and the difference they make every day”.

Chiltern Railways community rail lead Harry Burr, said: “We are proud to see Community Rail Week 2026 launch in Oxford, part of our network, celebrating the fantastic work taking place to make rail travel more inclusive and connected to local communities.
