Award success blooms for stations along the Settle to Carlisle line

Stations along the Settle to Carlisle line are celebrating their growing success in both the Yorkshire in Bloom and Cumbria in Bloom awards.

At the Cumbria in Bloom awards ceremony in Carlisle, four certificates were collected in the category of ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’, for Appleby, Dent, Ribblehead and Kirkby Stephen stations. The CRP also scooped up the Chair’s Special Award for the Appleby Station Art Project.

At the Yorkshire in Bloom awards last month, Horton-in-Ribblesdale and Settle stations also ranked as ‘advancing’ and ‘thriving’ in the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ category.

Susie Payne, operations manager for the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company, said: “We are grateful to all the volunteers who make our stations look so beautiful. Many people travel on our line to enjoy the scenery and love our original station buildings.

“We are also grateful to CrossCountry Community Engagement Fund for their grant support to provide new plants and planters for our stations.”

Pete Myers, chair of the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company, said: “We are all delighted about the success of our stations in both the Cumbria and Yorkshire in Bloom awards and look forward to growing on this achievement in 2025.

“We are working to encourage biodiversity and improve the environment for wildlife and people along the line. Our planters and gardens at the stations are a key part of this plan. We have feeders for birds, bug hotels and even red squirrel boxes at our stations to encourage wildlife.

“However, without our volunteers, this would not have been possible, and we would like to thank all members of the Friends of Settle Carlisle and hope others will be inspired to join them to make 2025 another blooming success.”

Ronnie Auld, chair of Cumbria in Bloom, said: “We were delighted to have so many railway stations enter the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ category, and we enjoyed visiting Ribblehead, Dent, Kirkby Stephen and Appleby to assess the stations there.

“There was so much to see at Appleby Station and the series of art boards made by the children at the local primary school is well worth a visit.”
