Barton Cleethorpes CRP unveils creative Railway 200 project on World Art Day

As part of their Railway 200 celebrations, Barton-Cleethorpes Community Rail Partnership (CRP) has launched a special project entitled ‘Railway 200: Art Along the Line’.

At the start of 2025, the CRP embarked on a mission to commemorate Railway 200 for years to come with a permanent art exhibition, and the project began with a series of art workshops to gather ideas from members of the public.

Local artist Nikita Spires was commissioned to produce the first artwork, a vibrant, hand-painted mural that reflects how Cleethorpes Station has developed over time.

The mural was officially unveiled on World Art Day, Tuesday 15 April, with over 40 people in attendance, including members of the public, local MPs and the Mayor of Cleethorpes.

The ‘Art Along the Line’ project was supported with funding from Community Rail Network.

L-R: Cllr. Steve Beasant, Mayor of Cleethorpes; Carl Thomas, Barton Cleethorpes CRP chair; and Nikita Spires, freelance artist.

Carl Thomas, chair of Barton Cleethorpes CRP, said: “Over the next twelve months, Barton Cleethorpes CRP will be unveiling other pieces of art as part of our contribution to celebrating 200 years of the railway. [This project commemorates] the past that built us, the present that connects us, and the future still to come.”

Steve Beasant, Mayor of Cleethorpes, said: “This stunning mural is the most recent in a series of community ventures which is highlighting Cleethorpes as an exceptional tourist location. Thank you to all involved from the local community and particularly Barton Cleethorpes CRP.”
