Carers group creates mosaic artwork for Rye House Station

A new mosaic artwork has been unveiled at Rye House Station in Hertfordshire.

The mosaics have been produced by a group of local carers from ‘Carers in Hertfordshire’ in partnership with the New River Line Community Rail Partnership (CRP) and designer Donna Reeves.

The three mosaic tiles, installed alongside the platform, use hundreds of hand-cut ceramic tiles and together read ‘Welcome to Rye House’.

Donna, who owns the ‘& By Donna Reeves’ shop in Ware and previously worked with the New River Line CRP to create mosaics for Ware Station, led six workshops and showed the carers how to cut tiles, make ceramics and construct the mosaic on mesh.

The £15,000 project was funded by Greater Anglia’s Customer and Community Improvement Fund, with the installation of the mosaic carried out by local firm HDM Industries.

Katie Goldthorpe, New River Line CRP officer, said: “The feedback was incredible, these are people who don’t often get time to themselves and to do something just for them was really important. The creative process allowed them to experience a real sense of wellbeing, and they were able to switch off from their very stressful and demanding lives.

“We are so pleased that this stunning mosaic is on display for all visitors to enjoy and that the project has been such a success.”

Scott Dolling, Greater Anglia’s partnerships manager, said: “We were pleased to support this initiative which has really enhanced Rye House station and has also helped to improve wellbeing.

“We are always looking to enhance the role of the railway in support of the community it serves, and our new Customer and Community Improvement Fund is a way of supporting further locally focused enhancements in line with community needs.”
