Community rail invited to connect with Campaign for Family Friendly Trains

Community rail partnerships and station groups are invited to connect with Campaign for Family Friendly Trains.

Campaign for Family Friendly Trains is a volunteer group striving for better facilities for children and their families on the UK rail network. Made up of mostly parents themselves, the group want to address challenges to travelling with young children on trains, to encourage more families to choose rail travel over private car use.

The group work closely with a range of stakeholders including train operators, Rail Delivery Group and the Department for Transport to advocate for improvements related to trains and stations. These include dedicated space for unfolded prams on trains, accessible changing facilities, step-free access and level boarding, creating playful waiting rooms and promoting the Breastfeeding Friendly Scheme.

Two train operators have even signed the Family-Friendly Pledge, most notably vowing never to order another fleet or refurbishment without space for unfolded prams and buggies.

Campaign for Family Friendly Trains is now interested in learning more about the work of community rail, and how their group can work with local communities to encourage more inclusive and sustainable journeys for all.

Abby, volunteer with Campaign for Family Friendly Trains, said: “Train travel is a fantastic option for families, but there is still work to be done to make rail journeys safe, comfortable and inclusive for everyone.

“We would love to connect with community rail partnerships and station groups on a local level to learn more about your work to open up rail travel to more people, and see how we can work together to advance accessible and inclusive travel.”
