Community rail project delivers hundreds of inclusive rail journeys across Essex

A community rail initiative to provide 200 free rail journeys to people across Essex who would not normally use the train has enabled many to experience rail travel for the first time.

‘200 Journeys’ was organised by the Essex & South Suffolk Community Rail Partnership (CRP) to mark Railway 200, a celebration of the birth of the modern railway in Great Britain.

The initiative was originally set out to provide 200 inclusive rail journeys, working with diverse groups, most of whom had never travelled by train. However, thanks to strong collaboration with local charities and community groups, the programme significantly exceeded expectations, reaching more than 370 participants from a wide range of backgrounds.

Across 13 organised trips, funded by Greater Anglia, participants of all ages, abilities, and circumstances, including individuals experiencing financial hardship, disabilities, and social isolation, were given the opportunity to explore their local area and beyond by rail.

Highlights included:

  • A day trip to Walton-on-the-Naze for asylum seekers, offering opportunities for social integration and English language practice, alongside visits to heritage and nature sites.
  • An innovative ‘English lesson on a train’ journey between Clacton-on-Sea and Colchester, including participants with physical and hidden disabilities.
  • Educational visits for students with learning disabilities to cultural venues such as Hollytrees Museum and Firstsite.
  • Festive ‘Christmas train’ experiences for families facing poverty, creating memorable moments and introducing children to rail travel in a joyful setting.
  • A unique behind-the-scenes visit to the Natural History Museum for children involved in environmental projects, many of whom had never travelled to London by train before.
  • Community wellbeing trips, including coastal exploration, museum visits, and cultural walks celebrating the end of Ramadan.

Participants consistently highlighted the train journey itself as a key part of the experience, with many describing it as their favourite element of the day. For some, it marked their first time travelling by train.

Jane Stewart, Essex & South Suffolk CRP officer, said: “200 Journeys was designed to give people the confidence to travel by rail and provide a positive first experience of using the train. For many participants, it removes uncertainty and shows just how easy and accessible rail travel can be. It’s incredibly rewarding to see people gain that confidence while also discovering the fantastic destinations along their local line.

“On each trip, at least one person had never travelled by train before, some had never travelled at all. Most participants said they would travel again if they could afford to, and some were already planning future leisure trips by the end of the day.”

Scott Dolling, Greater Anglia’s partnerships manager, said: “Our Customer and Community Improvement Fund is about supporting initiatives that bring real value to the communities we serve. Projects like this show how the railway can open up opportunities, support education and create positive, lasting experiences that build confidence to travel. We’re proud to work with our community rail partnerships to help make these ideas a reality.

“By breaking down barriers to rail travel and building confidence, the programme has not only exceeded its initial goals but also created lasting, meaningful impacts -demonstrating the vital role our community rail partnerships play in connecting people and opportunities across the region.”
