Education Network sessions on STEM, careers and Community Rail Week

Rail careers session – 16 February

On Thursday 16 February, the Community Rail Education Network welcomed representatives from Transpennine Express, Freightliner, Thales, Siemens Mobility and Porterbrook, all of whom gave members an insight into the lesser-known roles in the rail industry so that community rail officers can share this information when doing careers education work in schools.

The idea for the session originated back in 2022, when some members of the Education Network shared that they felt they lacked the knowledge about careers in the rail industry aside from the ‘usual’ roles of driver, conductor, etc. The guest speakers at this session spoke about the wide range of job roles that members can talk about during their school careers engagement, especially with National Careers Week coming up (6-11 March).

A recording of this session, as well as the presentation slides and notes, can be found on the Education Network website.

Upcoming Education Network meeting – 16 March

The next Education Network meeting will take place on Thursday 16 March, 10am-12pm. The session will be joined by a representative from Primary Engineer, who will be discussing how you can get your local schools involved in the Rail Engineer project. There will also be the opportunity for members of the Network to share ideas for youth engagement projects that will run as part of Community Rail Week.

If you are not currently on the Education Network mailing list and would like to attend the next session, contact Education and Youth Engagement Advisor Karen Bennett on karen@communityrail.org.uk.
