East Midlands Railway (EMR) has created an activity book to help teach young people to stay safe near the railway through a variety of puzzles, activities and games.
The booklet, aimed at primary school children, is free to download from EMR’s website. The EMR Community Rail team, in partnership with Rail Safe Friendly will be sharing the activity book with schools across the East Midlands. In addition, EMR is working with Rail Safe Friendly to offer workshops for schools and to produce a pamphlet about rail safety for adults.
Kaye Robinson, Community Engagement Manager at East Midlands Railway, said: “Ensuring children understand the dangers of playing on or near the railway is something we take incredibly seriously.
“We know that by communicating these messages early, it leaves a lasting impact on children, and we hope this new activity book is a useful resource for teachers and others who want to discuss these issues with pupils.
“Likewise, it’s always useful for adults to educate themselves on railway dangers too. Trespassing is illegal and could result in life-changing injuries or worse. There are many hidden dangers, including overhead power lines, from which 25,000 volts of electricity can jump if you get too close.”
