Festive fun along the Settle to Carlisle Line

The Settle-Carlisle Railway Development Company has been busy engaging the local community with festive activities along the line.

Appleby Station hosted Appleby Craft Group’s first Family Craft Session earlier this month, providing a space for a special festive decorations workshop to take place. The Family Festive Crafting morning was free, with a suggested donation of £5 per family. All crafting materials were provided by the Appleby Craft Group and refreshments by the Settle-Carlisle Railway Development Company.

John Moorhouse, Vice Chair of the Settle-Carlisle Railway Development Company, said: “We were delighted and grateful to the Appleby Craft Group for accepting our invitation to host the Christmas Crafting session in the waiting room at Appleby Station.

“These types of events are great opportunities for us to support the local community and we look forward to welcoming Appleby Craft Group back at the station in the new year, as well as other groups who would like to use our warm and friendly station space.”

Hosting local community groups isn’t the only activity the Settle-Carlisle Railway Development Company has been busy with. The popularity of a steam train charted to take passengers from Carlisle to York, organised by the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company, is creating a demand for more steam specials.

The LMS Royal Scot steam train carried over 400 people to York for the first weekend of the Christmas Markets, taking in the scenic journey down the world-famous Settle-Carlisle Line along the way. Tickets were sold out in days for the standard class, and an extra carriage was added to meet the demand from people across Cumbria looking to enjoy a day out by steam train.

John Moorhouse, Vice Chair of the Settle-Carlisle Railway Development Company, said: “It was wonderful to see so many children with their parents and grandparents on the train – for many it was their first journey by steam train and for others their first ever train journey. We hope it will inspire them and their families to join us on our scheduled Northern service.

“We hope to organise a special steam train to Chester in spring, and an announcement will be made on our Facebook and Instagram pages when tickets will be available.”
