The Friends of Handforth Station have combined their celebrations for Railway 200 and Heritage Open Days with a series of guided tours of the station.
Handforth Station is well known throughout the area for its heritage, and the volunteers pride themselves on maintaining and preserving this. The group have created video stories about local history, garden areas, poetry displays, art exhibitions (their ‘Art in a Box’ gallery was created from two disused bicycle lockers) and they have mounted heritage signs which have been designated as ‘nationally important’ by the Science Museum Group.
Each guided tour taking place this September will be led by a member of the friends’ group, who are excited to give an entertaining talk about the station and the local town and rail network in general.
The volunteers have already led four guided tours on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September. The remaining upcoming tours will take place on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September, at 10:30am and 2pm on both days.

Hugh Everett, secretary of the Friends of Handforth Station, said: “We’re so pleased to welcome people to see and hear about what we’re doing for the station.
“A lady who had travelled from Poynton to attend one of the guided tours said she had learnt a lot of history not only about the station, but also about Handforth town.”
