For World Car Free Day this Sunday 22 September, car-free champions Good Journey are highlighting some unusual rewards offered by their members for visitors who travel via public transport.
Good Journey launched in 2018, supported by a coalition of transport and conservation organisations including Community Rail Network, to address the need for more sustainable visitor travel in the UK.
The Good Journey website offers car-free travel directions and discounts to 500 attractions across the UK, including Derbyshire’s Chatsworth House, Leeds Castle, Suffolk’s Sutton Hoo, and Aberdeen Science Centre.
Some of the more unusual rewards on offer for visitors who travel car-free include:
- A gift of seasonal produce such as flower seeds from the garden, freshly harvested apples, a plant, or a bag of flour from the watermill at Acorn Bank, Lake District
- You can watch plays at five theatres across Newcastle without paying for your transport to get there
- £50 off your stay at Rail Holiday’s restored vintage railway carriages in Cornwall
- A hygiene pack containing gloves and a balaclava for whizzing round the track at Anglia Indoor Karting, Suffolk
Nat Taplin, director of Good Journey, said: “All our members offer some kind of reward for visitors who arrive car-free. Usually, it’s a discount on entry, a free hot drink or money off in the gift shop. But some places are already free to visit, or they don’t have a shop or cafe, so they have to think outside the box. Others want to offer something a little different for visitors who make the effort to travel green.
“Whether you live near a visitor attraction or are looking for ideas and inspiration for your next day trip or get-away, World Car Free Day is a great opportunity to discover all the fantastic places you can reach in the UK by foot, bike, bus or train.”
Plan your next car-free adventure via the Good Journey website.
