September welcomes the return of three national ‘Open Days’ festivals featuring thousands of free events and experiences bringing people together to celebrate their heritage, community and history across England, Scotland and Wales.
Community rail is encouraged to get involved and bring together the past and present in activities for all the family. Events could include workshops, talks, hidden spaces or guided walks. Alternatively, you could use the opportunity to promote your existing work online, for example including the official festival accounts in your posts, see below, to join in the conversations on social media.
More information about each festival, and how to get involved, can be found below:
- Heritage Open Days – England, 6 to 15 September – join the conversation on social media: #HODs @HeritageOpenDay
- Doors Open Days – Scotland, every weekend in September – join the conversation on social media: @DoorsOpenDays
- Cadw Open Doors – Wales, throughout September – join the conversation on social media: @CadwWales
This year’s shared European Heritage Days theme is Heritage of Routes, Networks and Connections and provides community rail with an ideal opportunity to get involved.
If you are planning to host an event, be sure to check each festival’s registration deadline (usually early August) to ensure it features on the festival website.
Share your activities with us, and they may be included in a special Heritage Open Days blog delivered through our tourism and leisure website, Scenic Rail Britain, and social media channels throughout September. Our email address is: news@communityrail.org.uk
