The East Suffolk Lines Community Rail Partnership (CRP) facilitated a trip for a group of Cub Scouts to visit Greater Anglia’s training academy in Stratford, London, giving them the opportunity to experience the company’s high-tech train driving simulators.

Nine young people from the 9th and 31st Ipswich Scout Groups travelled to the training academy for a day learning about the role of a train driver and taking turns in the simulators, which are normally used to train Greater Anglia drivers.

The visit began with a session led by Mark Robson, Greater Anglia’s driver trainer and simulator manager, who introduced the group to key facts about train driving and railway operations before guiding them onto the simulators.

The full-size simulator cabs replicate real train driving conditions, with large screens displaying routes across the Greater Anglia network, including different weather conditions, hazards and obstacles. Under the supervision of Greater Anglia staff, each Scout was taught basic driving skills and guided through a range of scenarios.

Thalia Woodgate, East Suffolk Lines CRP officer, said: “We were delighted to be able to give the Scouts access to the simulators. We hope the experience was both enjoyable and inspiring, and that it sparked their curiosity about the railway.”

Mark Robson, driver trainer and simulator manager at Greater Anglia, said: “It was really rewarding to take the group through the day and see their enthusiasm.

“Introducing the railway to people of all ages is important, and this was a fun way for the Scouts to learn more about what happens behind the scenes on the network.”

James Nunn, Scouts team leader, said: “The day exceeded all our expectations. The enthusiasm and care shown by the Greater Anglia team was outstanding, and the activities were delivered perfectly for the Cubs.

“They loved every minute and were buzzing long after the visit ended.”
