The Friends of Buxton Station are doing their bit to support the National Year of Reading literacy initiative.
The Friends of Buxton Station started their ‘book-swap station’ in 2020 to help rail travellers enjoy the train journey that little bit more. The idea of ‘give a book, take a book’ caught on and was harnessed by other community groups keen to bring unwanted books back into use. The volunteers were helped by a local bookshop, Scrivener’s, who often donated numerous copies of surplus popular books.
Thanks to support from Northern and the High Peak & Hope Valley Community Rail Partnership, the volunteer group has now created a leaflet detailing places to get free or cheap books, as well as literature about Buxton and the surrounding area, and signposting help available locally for those who struggle with reading.
Over 2,500 leaflets have been printed for distribution.

Dave Carlisle, chair of the Friends of Buxton Station, said: “We want to support the national campaign, which is all about getting books into people’s hands, to bring words alive and help those who struggle to read to get involved.
“Books fuel imagination, teach us things and bring fun along. Just for the year, we want to turn Buxton into Books-ton!”
