Retford Station commemorates local railway heritage hero

The Friends of Retford Station and the North Notts & Lincs Community Rail Partnership (CRP) are delighted to have unveiled a mosaic dedicated to the memory of Alan Pegler OBE, on Retford’s Heritage Day (14 September).

In the 1950s, Alan facilitated the purchase, and ultimately the revival and rebuilding, of the Ffestiniog Railway.

The new mosaic has been installed in Retford Station’s booking office, commemorating Alan and his incredible achievements to save the Ffestiniog Railway and the much-loved iconic steam train, the Flying Scotsman.

The unveiling was attended by representatives from the Friends of Retford Station, North Notts & Lincs CRP, local councillors, Bassetlaw Railway Society, Retford Civic Society, as well as members of Alan Pegler’s family.

Jim Anderson, chair of the Friends of Retford Station, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to celebrate Mr Pegler. He was a man dear to Retford, who played a leading role in preserving two remarkable pieces of British railway history.”
