Passengers travelling through St Margarets Station in Hertfordshire will now be welcomed by two new self-watering planters with floral displays, which have been installed to provide a boost to the local wildlife.
The New River Live Community Rail Partnership (CRP) and the St Margarets Station Adopters collaborated to install the planters, following a £700 grant from Greater Anglia’s Customer and Community Improvement Fund.
The officer for the New River Line CRP, Katie Goldthorpe, initially purchased the planters using the grant funds. Station adopters Robert and Rose Jewitt then installed and planted them, creating beautiful flower displays.
The planters are also self-watering to ensure that the plants can thrive even during the hotter summer months.

Katie Goldthorpe, New River Line CRP officer, said: “We were delighted to receive funding for the new planters at St Margarets Station. Not only will they ensure that passengers will be welcomed by a beautiful floral display, but they will also provide a boost to wildlife as we head into spring and summer.
“I would like to thank the station adopters at St Margarets for their help and hard work in bringing this project to fruition.”
Scott Dolling, Greater Anglia’s partnerships manager, said: “We were pleased to support this initiative which has facilitated a lovely floral display at St Margarets Station thanks to the amazing work of the CRP and the station adopter volunteers.
“We are always looking to enhance the role of the railway in support of the communities it serves, and our new Customer and Community Improvement Fund is a way of supporting more locally focused enhancements in line with community needs.”
