‘Tipples, Treats & Trails’ encourages sustainable leisure travel to Salisbury

‘Tipples, Treats & Trails’ has launched in Salisbury with a guided walk and lunch experience, connecting the city’s historic pubs with its modern food and drink scene.

The launch in Salisbury forms part of the wider ‘Tipples, Treats & Trails’ initiative, delivered by Hampshire Community Rail Partnership (CRP) with support from South Western Railway, which encourages people to discover independent pubs, cafés and walking routes within easy reach of stations along the Hills to Harbour, Three Rivers and Wey Valley lines.

Led by Blue Badge Guide James Fernandes, the walk took attendees through Salisbury’s streets, stopping at key landmarks including the Haunch of Venison, one of the oldest pubs in England. The venue is closely linked to the city’s World War II history, when Winston Churchill and Allied forces were based nearby at Wilton House to plan the D-Day landings.

The route followed Salisbury’s pub and hospitality story through the centuries, finishing at newly opened Hettie Bells, where guests were treated to a complimentary lunch and drink.

Curated ‘Tipples, Treats & Trails’ guides are available online, helping visitors to plan their next days out, support local businesses and leave the car at home. The campaign features bold, eye-catching artwork designed by John Bailey of Best Impressions and is supported by printed leaflets and beer mats in partner venues, all linking through to a fully interactive online map, making it easy to plan and enjoy a day out by train.

Mikey Nevitt, Hampshire CRP officer, said: “Tipples, Treats & Trails brings together over 200 independent venues and walking routes from stations, making it easy to explore by rail.

“At a time when local businesses need our support, it’s about enjoying a train trip, a walk, and a well-earned pint or coffee, all whilst backing local.”
