Tourism Network on tour: members take a fascinating trip to Marston Vale CRP

Members of the Community Rail Tourism Network visited Marston Vale Community Rail Partnership in October to showcase their inspiring initiatives and station projects.

The visit is one of many in a series aimed at supporting sustainable tourism by rail and sharing best practice on how Community Rail Network members develop and promote their tourism offer though diverse and inspiring initiatives.

On Friday 24 October, members of the Tourism Network gathered in Bedford, where the group boarded the train along the scenic Marston Vale Line. As the group journeyed through picturesque countryside, CRP officer Stephen Sleight provided a guided tour of the passing stations, and the different projects that have taken place along the line to enhance local rail travel and community engagement.

When the group arrived at Ridgmont Station they were treated to a delicious lunch in the charming Tea Rooms, followed by a chance to catch up with fellow Tourism Network colleagues.

The afternoon continued with a tour of the beautiful community garden, where volunteer Nicola introduced the group to the inspiring Rails to Roots social prescription programme. This initiative is making a real difference in people’s lives, using the peace of nature and connection of community to support wellbeing.

The day concluded with a visit to the Heritage Centre, where the guests were able to step back in time to explore the station’s rich history, before heading back on the train to Bedford.

Alice Mannion, campaigns & communications manager at Community Rail Network, said: “We were thrilled that Marston Vale CRP invited our Tourism Network members on this visit. It was wonderful to spend the day in Ridgmont, meeting volunteers and seeing first-hand the inspiring work going on in the area to bring people together with the railway at its heart.

“The meet-up was a fantastic opportunity to share ideas, strengthen partnerships and celebrate the role of community rail in promoting tourism and wellbeing. A massive thank you to the Marston Vale CRP for hosting and we look forward to seeing where our next Tourism Network visit takes us.”

Stephen Sleight, transport team leader (rail) for Marston Vale CRP, said: “I was delighted to host the Tourism Network visit on the Marston Vale Line and its ‘jewel in the crown’ at Ridgmont Station Heritage Centre.

“It was great to welcome community rail colleagues from across the country and share ideas. I really value being part of the Tourism Network, the meetings are really enjoyable and a constant source of inspiration. I would encourage other Community Rail Network members to join.”
