A special train from Wickford to Burnham-on-Crouch provided a great day out for 50 people living with dementia and their carers in Essex.
The group enjoyed a relaxed and memorable day out aboard the Crouch Valley Carers ‘Thank You’ event train, organised by the Essex and South Suffolk Community Rail Partnership (CRP), Greater Anglia and Kinder Essex.
The initiative aimed to offer a fun and inclusive experience, helping to build confidence around using public transport. Attendees were warmly welcomed by staff and volunteers before boarding the train, where live music and singalongs created a lively, friendly atmosphere throughout the journey.
Following the train ride, on 18 September, the group boarded a bus to the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, where the festivities continued. Guests were treated to a freshly prepared lunch and had the chance to relax, chat and take in the riverside views. Many carers appreciated the opportunity to connect with others who understand the unique challenges they face, all within a supportive and welcoming environment.

Andrew Wolckenhaar, Essex & South Suffolk CRP officer, said: “Initiatives like this help to build confidence for people living with dementia and their carers, showing that rail travel can be accessible, welcoming, and enjoyable for all.”
Kelly Coombs from Kinder Essex said: “It was wonderful to host our Crouch Valley Carers Thank You Event alongside Greater Anglia and the Essex & South Suffolk Community Rail Partnership teams. It was a real celebration for people to come together and feel welcome, supported and connected. Our heartfelt thanks to all the people that kindly volunteered their time to help out on the day.”
Alan Neville, Greater Anglia’s customer and community engagement manager, said: “We are proud to support events like the Crouch Valley Carers Thank You Event, which demonstrate the power of the railway to promote social inclusion and wellbeing. It is a pleasure to work with partners who are so committed to creating positive travel experiences for all.”
