Young adopters bring Christmas cheer to Flimby Station

Pupils at Flimby Primary School have designed their annual Christmas banner for display at Flimby Station over the festive period.

Since adopting Flimby Railway Station in 2019, Flimby Primary School have had the opportunity to take the children along the west coast on the train and work together with Community Rail Cumbria on a range of different initiatives.

The group were awarded 3rd place in the category of ‘Best Community Engagement Project’ at the 2022 Community Rail Awards for their work on the ‘Our Flimby’ project, aiming to encourage the local community to reconnect with family, friends, and neighbours by going out and exploring Flimby, taking photographs of their favourite places and putting them forward for display at the station on the ‘Board of Hope’.

It has now become a tradition for the children to create and display a new Christmas banner at the station every year, alongside some fresh seasonal wreaths, with the children creating designs that wish all those who travel by train a Merry Christmas.

The project is supported with funding from Northern.

Warren Birch, officer at Community Rail Cumbria, said: “It’s one of my favourite times of the year helping to judge the wonderful artwork created by the pupils of Flimby Primary School. The banner brings a festive cheer to the railway station for all to enjoy.”

Headteacher Tanya Peers said: “We are delighted to be displaying some of our children’s Christmas drawings on our annual banner at Flimby Railway Station. The winning designs are colourful and festive and provide a warm welcome to all visitors arriving by train. The wreaths that we have also displayed alongside the banner add the finishing touch. Be sure to head down and check it out!”
