Singing the story of Elsecar: SYMCA celebrates heritage, harmony and rail travel

A unique blend of history, music and community spirit came together at Elsecar Station for ‘Singing the Story of Elsecar’, a walking tour with a difference.

Led by Dr Tegwen Roberts, the event on 13 October invited participants to step into Elsecar’s rich industrial past through storytelling and song, bringing local history to life in a deeply engaging way.

Organised by the community rail team at South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), the event formed part of the national Railway 200 celebrations. As well as marking 200 years of railway history, it encouraged people to explore South Yorkshire by train to unlock hidden heritage, scenic landscapes and vibrant cultural experiences.

Starting at Elsecar Station, the walk traced the old wagonway, passed through Gasworks Field, and visited heritage sites including the Newcomen Engine – the oldest steam engine still in its original location – and the Victorian Canal Basin, once a hive of industrial activity.

As the group walked, they sang traditional songs rooted in local heritage, such as Tower of Steam and Six Jolly Miners. The singing added emotional depth to the experience, connecting participants to the lives and voices of those who once lived and worked in the area.

Beyond its historical focus, the walk also highlighted the benefits of singing in an informal, social setting – fostering inclusion, wellbeing and a sense of belonging.

Cathrine Ashworth, community rail officer at SYMCA, said: “Rail travel makes it easy to discover the incredible places and stories that surround us. Elsecar is a brilliant example of how accessible, sustainable transport can connect people to heritage, nature and each other. Encouraging exploration by train helps support local tourism and builds pride in our communities.”

Due to its success, a follow-up walk and singing tour is planned for spring 2026. To register your interest, please contact SYMCA’s community rail team. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome.
